Crit 2.0

Matty Ryu:

Matt had the idea of a place to take a break from the everyday rituals where one could rearrange his/her thoughts. That became his sustenance. Serene space to balance the "mental hardships" with sense of privacy reflected on the enclosing fabric design. Serenity within design is projected with sunlight softened through the fabric and visual symbolism of a cocoon. His idea was situated on the balcony of an apartment building where in a deliberate sense, one would be out of the public, but moreover, as to create a connection between the insides of the home to the outside. Described as almost a "timeout zone" made for kids and adults alike without being forced to.

Lauren found her sustenance through what she seeks first when she wakes, that is, Ipod. She then began her idea through the relationship between people and music, and how music is one of the core elements in life which nowadays and since always, music is and has been a sustenance. Music was found to be the drive of many things such as our creative process and stimulation of our memories and feelings. She then introduced a space in the park with an iconic image representation of Ipod, also the main source of her music. A space to pause and think, a place to sit and share. She then decided to link the designs of an old lamp post with Ipod, a new technology of music as to consider the age of music and to reflect the diversities of music, that not all music is to everyone's taste.
Music fills the space without it taking up any.

The transparent facade was for the narrative manner of representing one with OCD. Seeing in third person, the imagined effects and surface of the mind.

React,
Screws poking into the brain,
Confusing disarranged exterior becomes the interior.

Beds were added underneath the kitchen bench returning to the idea of providing more from less space. The room then becomes a space easily shaped to different needs while the space the room occupies is left unaltered.

The Head

The exterior became an illustrative point of screws of different size and length poking at the brain where the problem lies, and possibly the solution. The brain became the room. The room became the therapy.

Script Collective

And its effects.

Brain Interior

Inside the mind lies the insanity. Padded cell became its symbol.

The room was then decorated to fit the needs of a living space while concerning also the needs of a person with OCD, particularly obsessed with flawless arrangement.

Flawless arrangement is subjective. Regarding the difficulties found with OCD, an idea of treatment or more so comfort was to minimise and hide the the living space necessities which also in turn, provided more space. Everything tucked away, the room would assume the padded cell, needless of arranging and making a reminder of my imbalance.

Gradual Toleration

Arrangement and alignment.
Obsession with every pointless repeated checking of objects, time is wasted. Time taken from me with complete acknowledgment. A mental Prison made by me, for me.

The intention was for the seemingly irregular bits of extrusions to concentrate into the room, a prison set to become a trap. Reflecting on the Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) when one is again and again exposed to a situation obsessive thoughts are set off. Gradual toleration.

Insanity

With the idea of a room resembling a padded cell, a simple pattern was created using stroke tool to make a black lining around the edges. Remembering a quote by Einstein I think it was of how he defined insanity. Something like "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results." I felt this to be in relation to my obsession of when, for example, I would repeatedly try and line my laptop to the table, mousepad to laptop, and everything else come after.

My Sustenance and Me.

My sustenance is arrangement associated with Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). If something was out of place, out of line to other things in my room, I must correct it, everything must be in line with each other,  in order to rid of the stress and thoughts before I can move on with the daily rituals. Therefore, perfectionistic but needless and time-consuming arrangement becomes my sustenance. It is what sustains me to feel at ease. A sense of security? perhaps.

Vector Arena Park became the location for the room remembering from Judy's remark on how, to place an object in an environment with the opposite characteristics to compliment. As the room focus on obsession with arrangement and the surface of water is in the absence of form and in forever changing arrangement.

Architecture is ...

Architecture is a live thing. It has character and changes.
Architecture is human intervention.
Architecture is personal. We all interpret differently.
Architecture is relational.
Architecture is change. Evolution and Revolution.
Architecture is space.
Architecture is reflective. Our culture and others.
Architecture is performance.

Beavers have dams, ants have colonies, we see architecture in it,
because we are conscious of it.

The notion of subject

What is Subject?
Subject  that which forms a basic matter of thought, discussion, investigation, etc. (dictionary.com)

Subject could be big or small, in the matter of physicality or importance. Subjective, in compliment to subject, would assume a personal element. It is what you think whereas subject is a topic, a story. Subject is something we conceive. Different subjects extract different meanings to think of, to make of. A subject is a person, therefore a person is a subject. We are subjects. Subjects to what?

Autodesk 3ds Max

On the first day of our second chapter, we got to work on 3d modelling using Autodesk 3ds Max. It was more coming to know the software and therefore the model shapes were purely exploratory, I thought. Hopefully soon, I become familiar with an idea of what sustenance means to me, and that translated into shape and form.

For me
